My New Year’s Day Message

2008 will commonly be known to many of us as “ The year we were taken for a RIDE “. Words like Recession, Inflation, Downturn, Economy, come to mind. Sadly for many, this also meant Retrenchment. It proves that money does make this world go round, with the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer. With no definite end in sight, we can only tighten our expenses, our spending, our otherwise generosity towards those in need, and hope for the light at the end of this darkness.

My wife tells me that this is another reminder for us to not only live frugally, but to also go green, and recycle junk that we do not use or do not really need. Like my email signature quotes Eric Hoffer, who says, “ You can never get enough of what you don’t really want ”.

However, in the Advent season of giving out of love for others, it is disturbing when some people choose to save money, by recycling presents, especially old ones that have been kept away, they may not even be rewrapped, and then are passed off as brand new. Although the intention maybe general goodwill, the person receiving the recycled present actually gets an invisible and unwanted slap instead. This is why many people think that the whole deal with Christmas gift giving is a farce.

On a brighter note, 2008 has also given us a few pleasant surprises that cannot be returned, refunded, nor refused.

1. For our family, my wife and I now have 2 lovely children, Sophia and Noah.

2. On 2 January 2009, I will begin serving in full time Christian Ministry at Paya Lebar Methodist Church, in their Children’s Ministry, comprising of Sonshine Kids, and Silver Boxes.

My immediate goal is to build trust with the Leaders, Teachers, and the Children, while I uplift them with prayer and encouragement, and empower them to build and own their Ministry.

As a family, our challenge is to grow stronger in the Lord our God. As individuals, as husband and wife, as parents, and as children.

3. I would like to thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support during my journey of faith, and ask you to keep us in your thoughts each time you pray for others. We wish you a Happy New Year, and trust God will continue to lead you to all goodness, as you serve the people in your given ministries. May we all try our best to bring glory to God in the name of his Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen !

Mdm Yap Foong Lin - 92 years old - 20 December 2008

This is the redux of my Eulogy for her 8.00pm Wake Service on 21 December 2008 at the Garden Of Rememberance:

I represent the 14 Grand children and 5 Great Grand children.

Do you know where the Cairnhill Road ERP Gantry is? The house at that junction is where her children and I used to live. It was the fourth unit, but with the road widening, it is now the one at the corner. Por Por loved and cared for us. She would make sure we had eaten, and looked after us when we were sick. That place holds many good memories. Now, I will think more of Por Por whenever I drive past there.

It was painful to see Por Por, especially after her operations. She broke both her hips. That means there were two operations, and not forgetting her stays at Ang Mo Kio for rehab. It was painful to see Por Por, each time she was in hospital. She would say, "Thank you for visiting me.", but somehow, we felt we could not do enough. All we could do was to Thank God for healing her each time.

When I was growing up, as a teenager, Por Por would say to me, "Some things are beyond your understanding." I do know a lot. I stand before you as a married man, and I have two children. She would look me in the face, and still say, "Some things are beyond your understanding." In the Holy Bible, we read that God's ways are sometimes beyond our understanding. Now Por Por is in heaven with God, looking down at me, and saying, "Some things are beyond your understanding."
There are so many things I could say about Por Por.

When it is our time, I can see Por Por doing one of three things:
1. She will be looking after young children who have been called home before their time
2. She will be looking after a garden and growing beautiful orchids wonderfully
3. She will be helping Jesus prepare the banquet when it is our time

Every Christmas, I think of the Birth of Jesus Christ, because he is the Savior who was sent to save us from our sins. Every Christmas from now on, I will also be thinking of Por Por.

Por Por, till we meet again, we love you.
